These pages illustrate the range of furniture that is made on a regular basis. However, due to demand, it is not always possible to carry all items in stock and there may be times when such a piece has to be made to order. All 1/16th items are made in this way.

Our furniture is made from a variety of timbers and reflects that used in the real piece. We know there are people who do not agree with this philosophy but in our opinion nothing can match the quality of the real thing. A sentiment shared by one of the “masters” of miniature furniture Harry W. Smith. We are indebted to him to for allowing us to quote from his book “The Art of Making Furniture in Miniature” and which is published here with the permission of Scott Publications.

“In the field of miniatures there is a general tendency to make one wood, such as basswood, do the job of all woods, giving it the appearance of walnut or cherry merely by staining. Personally, I have always made a point of using the same woods in my miniatures as were used in the full-size originals”.

Because we use the “real thing”, we are very selective with regard to the choice of grain used. This means we choose carefully the wood we buy and select the pieces we think are the best with regard to colour and grain. This stock has then to be seasoned and machined. It sometimes seems we are being taken over by pieces of wood but it is all worth while when we see the end result.

The woods that we use are mainly oak, yew, elm, walnut, pine and mahogany. Yew can be very attractive in the small scales due to it’s very close grain. Like full size pieces, ours may change colour slightly as they age and develop a patina. This is a natural process and not a fault. Some timbers, yew and pine for example, change more rapidly than others. A point to bear in mind if ordering a number of pieces over a period of time. The pieces are finished by hand waxing and do not suffer from the heavy treacle type varnish that is applied to many miniature pieces.

The examples at the left of the page show the colour and grain of the different woods we use. They are as accurate as scanning will allow. However, we are happy to supply wood samples if required.

Sizes are given for pieces in 1/12th and 1/24th scales. If you wish to order a piece in 1/16th and need to know it’s size, we will be happy to supply this information. It should be noted that due to each piece being made individually by hand, the sizes may vary slightly from that given. However, when ordering matched pieces or sets of furniture, these will all be made to the same size and the wood carefully matched for colour and grain. We have just started to make pieces in 1/48th scale. For more details click here.

Any piece from our range can be made to order in an alternative wood to that described. Prices are usually the same as for those detailed. Similarly, we can modify any piece if you so wish. This is

something we have done in the past. Similarly, if you can not find just what you are looking for, we are happy to make commissioned pieces.

The following abbreviations have been used with the sizes :- L- length, W - width, D - depth and H - height.

Repairs and Kits

As well as making our own pieces, we can repair a treasured piece that is damaged or missing some part. We will carry out anything from a small repair to a near rebuild. In the case of missing parts, every care is taken to ensure the replacement will match the type, colour and grain of the original.

Have you bought a furniture kit and not had the time to make it? Or you may have had a go at a kit and it has ended up in disaster. Either way, we can put it together for you or salvage it even if it means making some new part. What may seem only suitable for the tip can often end up as a beloved piece of furniture.
