Firegrates & Spits

Metal firegrates such as these have been in use for many centuries. Their development can be traced back to firedogs that were in use in the Roman period and possibly beyond that. Before the use of chimneys, fires were simply laid on the floor. By raising the fire off the floor and allowing air to circulate underneath, it was found to burn more efficiently.

Large firegrates with and without logs in 1/12th scale

Firegrates such as ours came into use as chimneys became a normal household feature. The firedog also continued in use. Initially they would have been fairly simple and made in wrought iron by the local blacksmith. It is this type of firegrate on which our design is based. Although more elaborate and decorative styles evolved, simple ones continued to be made and used through the years. Ours is suitable from the Tudor period onwards and could be used in a more simple setting of the Georgian era or a humble Victorian room. They are equally at home in a cottage of any period.

Spit without logs in 1/24th scale

The spit is a variation of the firegrate where brackets were fitted to the front uprights to support the spits on which meat was turned as it cooked. The model we produce features removable spits in both 12th and 24th scales.

Our pieces are made from brass and are soldered together for strength. They are finished to simulate black wrought iron. Available with or without logs, they come in two sizes (see illustration and notes for details). We can also make firegrates to your own sizes and design. If your house is wired and lit, you may like the fires to glow. We can do this by fitting them with red LED’s.
